Macon - William H. Lamb Jr. passed away Saturday, June 13, 2026, at Pine Pointe Hospice in Macon.

Bill was born in New York City and lived on Long Island before moving to Boca Raton, Florida, with his mother and father at the age of 9. He graduated from the University of Florida with a B.S. and his M.S. in physics. He then moved to Illinois and was employed at Argonne National Laboratory where he worked on establishing the Zero Gradient Synchrotron, a proton accelerator which laid the groundwork for modern particle colliders. He then went to Auburn University where he received his Ph.D. After graduating, he took a position teaching physics at Georgia College in Milledgeville. While there, he inspired many students who went on to become physicists, engineers, chemists, doctors and teachers. He was famous for his "bed of nails" demonstration of pressure and inertia. He was also famous for his wit and humor in the classroom. For many, he made their years at GC a bit brighter and more memorable. He did the same for his family every day they spent with him.

For several years, he was quite active in amateur radio, especially two meters. He enjoyed talking and joking around with his fellow ham radio operators. He loved reading and enjoyed many great authors. His favorite was John Updike. He was quite a storyteller himself, regaling friends and family with tales from his youth and more recent past — such as "The Monster of Herty Hall."

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Cathy; his sons Joe, Wade and Cody (Mary Ann); his granddaughter Stephanie and his grandson Brian.

A private service will be held by the family.
