Waymond  Boyer Sr.
Waymond Sterling Boyer, Sr., 94, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 8 2019, at his home in Hancock County. Funeral services will be held Friday, Oct. 11 at 11 a.m. at the chapel of Moores Funeral Home with the Rev. David Ray and the Rev. Danny Hedgepeth officiating. Private burial will follow at Linton Cemetery.
Mr. Boyer was born in Hancock County, where he attended school. A World War II veteran, he joined the United States Army in 1943 and served almost two years overseas. During that time, he was wounded twice for which he later was awarded two Purple Hearts. He also received the Bronze Star Award for his valor in fierce combat with German soldiers in 1944. He was a true American hero who proudly served his country.
Mr. Boyer lived in Hancock County his entire life. He retired from J.P. Stevens & Co. after working there many years. During his retirement, he enjoyed farming, fishing, and hunting, especially coon hunting. Many young men from surrounding counties hold cherished memories of hunting with "Papa Sterling" in Buffalo Swamp.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Clara Boyer, brothers Thomas, Jr., Robert, Billy, and Jack; sisters, Elsie Garland, Clarice Gaultney, Aquilla Bridger; a great granddaughter, Sadie Brett Boyer, and his sons-in-law Ben Stewart and Ernie Simons.
Mr. Boyer is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Sadie; his children, Glenda Stewart, Carol Simons, Cindy Cawley (Jack), Waymond S. Boyer, Jr. (Vonnie), and Melanie Bloodworth (John); grandchildren, Reggie Simons (Ginny), Jill Johnson (Jamie), Chris Cawley (Courtney), Amy Webb, Jon Cawley (Brittany), Caroline Bryan (Luke), Matt Stewart (Lindsey), Bo Boyer (Ellen), Adam Kirk (Ashley) and Audrey Lamar (Kelby); step-grandson, MacKay Bloodworth (Sherrie); nineteen great-grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren also survive.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Linton Cemetery Fund c/o June Roberson, P.O Box 1144, Milledgeville GA 31059.
The family will receive friends Friday from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. at Moores Funeral Home.
