Steve
Mr. Steve Lewis "Bubba" 69, of Adrian gained his angel wings on Sunday morning, July 28, 2019.
Born in Fort Benning, Ga. he was the eldest of three children born to the late Fred Ray Lewis and Juanita Laverne Smith Lewis. He graduated from Elbert County High School, Class of 1968. He later attended Truett McConnell and Brenau University where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and psychology. Steve began a career with the Georgia Department of Corrections in 1970. He worked through various assignments until serving and retiring as warden at Frank Scott State Prison in Milledgeville with 34 years of total service in 2004. From 1985 until the mid-1990s, Steve served as the scout leader for Boy Scout Troop 660, Demorest, Ga. After moving to Adrian he served the citizens of Adrian as their mayor.
Steve was an avid fisherman, he loved old western movies, playing his acoustic guitar, listening to Southern gospel music and spending time with his family.
He was a member of and deacon at Orianna Baptist Church.
Steve leaves behind his wife, Emily Mimbs Lewis; children, Melissa McClellon (Daryl), Cornelia, Ga., Jason Lewis (Tonya), Lexington, Ga.; siblings, Sandra Webb (Gary), Colbert, Ga., Kevin Lewis (Kelly), Elberton, Ga., Ray Allen Lewis (Angela), Greenville, S.C.; grandchildren, Wesley McClellon, Peyton Lewis, Tyler Burrell, Gannon Williford; several nieces and nephews and countless extended family, co-workers and friends that will cherish the memories of his life.
Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 30, 2019, in the Williams Chapel of Sammons Funeral Home with Darrell Hart, the Rev. Gene Currin and the Rev. Arthur Conley officiating.
Steve was laid to rest in the family plot in Westview Cemetery, Soperton, Ga. with honors accorded by the Georgia Department of Corrections Color Guard. His family received friends on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Sammons Funeral Home.
Serving as pallbearers were: Frank Daniel, Hayden Youmans, Nick Lewis, Nate Lewis, Les Salter, Gregory Mason, Ronnie Youmans, Brian Watts and Ricky Hilburn.
Serving as honorary pallbearers were former and current employees of the Georgia Department of Corrections as well as members of the law enforcement community.
