Ruth Meier
On Oct. 18, 2019, Ruth Uhler Meier, loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to many, passed away at her home, Pinesong, on Meier Circle, due to complications from cancer.
Ruth was born on March 17, 1951, in Milledgeville. She attended Sacred Heart Parochial School, City Elementary, and Baldwin High School (Class of 1968), where she was voted Most Intellectual. Following graduation, Ruth attended Florida Presbyterian College, later transferring to Georgia College and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature.
Ruth contributed to her community in many ways. She taught elementary school in both Baldwin and Wilkinson counties, and later taught English at the Georgia Women's Correctional Institute. Ruth also worked in shipping, bookkeeping, database management, and implemented a healthcare plan at M&M Clays Inc., the family's kaolin company. She finished her professional career with Old Hickory Clay Company.
On June 10, 1972, she married the love of her life, Homer Neal Meier Jr. on Breezy Hill. Together they raised twins, a daughter, Margaret Rose, and a son, Homer Neal Meier III. The family grew to include seven grandchildren: Ava, Zula, Joe, Clara, Grady, Lavinia and Iris.
Ruth had a passion for education, motherhood, the arts, and social justice. She tactfully encouraged others to debate life's issues with passion and commitment. Dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother, Ruth made her home a joy to live in. A great cook and storyteller, Ruth enjoyed life's simple pleasures. She had a profound appreciation for literature, and could often be found reading beside her favorite window. Ruth could whistle a tune, loved working with her hands through embroidery, crocheting blankets for her grandchildren, and baking bread for all to enjoy.
Early in her life, Ruth attended Camp Juliette Low, and was inspired by the sisterhood and camaraderie of preparing girls for confident living and leadership, later becoming a counselor and active alumni. In addition, Ruth was an active member of the Oconee Valley Iris Club and frequently earned prestigious awards for her flower arranging. Ruth was also involved in the National Society of the Colonial Dames. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Margaret Uhler, and a brother James Richard Uhler.
She leaves a loving family to cherish her memory including her husband of 47 years: Homer Neal Meier Jr.; children: Rose, (Scott); their children Ava, Zula, Clara and Lavinia, Neal (Kristin); their children, Joe, Grady and Iris; Brother: Steve (Elaine) and nieces, Maggie and Marie Uhler; sister: Adair (Drew) Wood.
The family will welcome visitors at Moores Funeral Home on Tuesday, Oct. 22, at 1 p.m. with the servicers to follow at 2 p.m. Interment will follow at Memory Hill Cemetery. Dr. Harold Lawrence will officiate.
