Palmer Doyle Thomas Obituary

Palmer Doyle Thomas, or "Poppy" to his family and friends, passed away on July 1, 2024, at the age of 92 in Eatonton, Georgia. Born Jan. 28, 1932, in Floyd County, Virginia, he led a life marked by dedication to his family, innovation in his profession, and service to his country and community.

Palmer served in the Air Force from 1951 to 1954, a period during which he honed skills that would later define his career. He graduated from Virginia Tech in 1959, furthering his education in a field that would see him become a pivotal figure in technology. Palmer's career as a mechanical engineer started at Western Electric where he earned accreditation as a professional engineer and where he remained with Western Electric, eventually becoming AT&T/Lucent, until he retired. His career was distinguished by his pioneering work in fiber optic technology where he earned seven patents and was a key leader in product manufacturing facility projects in Omaha, Nebraska and China.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Palmer was a committed member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Milledgeville, Georgia, where he was deeply involved in the community. His hobbies included woodworking, fishing and being everyone's handyman. Palmer also enjoyed good scotch, bluegrass music and NASCAR. Palmer was especially passionate about spending time and hosting friends and family at the lake, especially his grandchildren and their friends, creating lasting memories to be cherished forever.

Palmer was the beloved husband of Mary Thomas, with whom he shared 63 wonderful years. Palmer and Mary began their lives in Baltimore, Maryland and eventually moved to Tucker, Georgia. Upon retirement, they moved to their lake house in Eatonton, where "Poppy" was able to thrive in the role he cherished; being a grandparent. He was a loving father to Debbie Thomas Richardson, Michael Thomas and the late Cheri Thomas Mathis. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Courtney Richardson, Lauren Mathis Stahl and Catherine Mary Richardson Hodsdon. Palmer also leaves behind a sister, Willie Collins; a niece, Velda Croy Wells; and a nephew, Eric Croy.

Palmer's life was a testament to his values of hard work, innovation and family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
