Valdosta, Georgia - Mildred JoAnn Nelson, 77, of Valdosta, Ga., passed away on Thursday, Aug. 28, 2025, at Fellowship Home at Brookside. She was born on Dec. 13, 1947, in McIntyre, Ga. to the late Joe and Mildred (Arrington) Smith.
She loved collecting antiques and had a special eye for finding beauty in old things. She cared deeply for animals and often took in those that needed a home. She was an avid reader who loved getting lost in a good book every day. Independent films and movies were her favorite pastime. Motown music always made her smile — she loved to sing and dance to it. Holidays were her favorite time of year, and she loved hosting family and friends, filling her home with warmth, laughter and delicious food she cooked herself. She worked for many years at Central State Hospital in Milledgeville, Ga., where she was known for her dedication and kind heart. Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Fred Nelson.
Survivors include her son, Neal Nelson (Kelly) of Cedar Hill, Tenn.; son, Michael Bloodworth (Jennifer) of McIntyre, Ga.; grandchildren: Brittany Bloodworth and Gracie Bloodworth; great grandchild, Carter; sister, Vicki Gholson of McIntyre, Ga., several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
