With profound sadness, we announce the tragic passing of Michael Bruce
Spillers, 55, on the morning of Tuesday, April 1, 2025, in Atlanta,
Georgia. Michael was a beloved son, brother, uncle and friend whose light
and laughter touched everyone he met. His presence was larger than life, and
his absence leaves an immeasurable void in the hearts of those who knew him.
Born in Milledgeville, Georgia, on Nov. 19, 1969, to James Larry
Spillers and Angela Sims Spillers, Michael was raised in a home filled with
love, laughter, and a strong sense of family. He grew up surrounded by a
large and lively extended family that helped shape his quick wit, sharp
mind and generous spirit.
Michael was a proud alumnus of John Milledgeville Academy and The University of Georgia, where he earned both his undergraduate degree in journalism and a graduate degree in mass communications. His passion for storytelling, media and film was evident in everything he did. A true movie buff, Michael had an encyclopedic knowledge of cinema and could critique films with insight, humor and depth. Whether it was a classic film or the latest blockbuster, he had an opinion — and it was always delivered with his
signature wit and charm.
Michael never met a stranger. His ability to light up a room with his
infectious laughter and boundless energy was unmatched. He had a rare gift
for making people feel seen, valued and loved. His humor was legendary, his
kindness unparalleled, and his love for life contagious. Whether engaging in
passionate debates about Star Wars (which he adored more than anything),
sharing stories that left people in tears of laughter, or playing an intense
game of Uno Attack with his beloved nieces, Michael's presence made every
moment unforgettable.
Michael's friendships were just as important to him as his family. He
cultivated deep and lasting bonds, forming a chosen family of friends who
cherished him for his warmth, loyalty and unwavering support. He was the
friend who always showed up — whether to celebrate life's greatest joys or to offer a shoulder in its hardest moments. His circle of friends stretched far
and wide, bound together by the countless memories of shared laughter,
late-night conversations, and the knowledge that with Michael, you always had someone in your corner.
A lifelong sci-fi enthusiast, Michael also had a deep appreciation for Star
Trek and its vision of exploration, adventure and hope. He believed in the
power of storytelling to inspire and connect people across time and space.
Though he has now boldly gone where we cannot yet follow, his legacy will
live long and prosper in the hearts of all who loved him.
He is survived by his loving parents, Angela Sims Spillers and James Larry
Spillers; his devoted sister, Lisa Spillers Wilson (Harris); his cherished
nieces, Jess Wilson Meyer (Hays), Virginia Wilson Shows (Reid) and Ellison
Sims Wilson; and his beloved aunts and uncles, Jackie Johnson (Larry), Sue
Ellen Brack (Randy) and Gary Spillers, all of whom he adored. His family
was the center of his world, and he treasured every moment spent with them.
He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Michael's passing is an unimaginable loss, but his spirit will live on
through the countless stories, memories, and laughter he gifted to those
around him. As we mourn his departure, we also celebrate the incredible life
he lived — one filled with love, humor and boundless generosity.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at 3 p.m., with
visitation at 2 p.m. at 1670 N. Jefferson St. NE, Milledgeville, GA 31061. In
