Maredith  Griffith
Maredith Byrd Griffith, 99, passed away Saturday, Nov. 9, 2019. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church with Father David Probst officiating.
Mrs. Griffith was born in Bridgeport, Tennessee on Sept. 27,1920. After graduating from Cooke County High School, she soon joined the war effort, becoming a civilian sheet metal mechanic for the US Army Air Force in Nashville, Tennessee. She then moved to Mobile, Alabama to work as an electrical installer for Consolidated Vultee Aircraft. There she met her husband of 71 years, James Alison Griffith, who was stationed in Mobile with the United States Coast Guard after his WWII tour of duty in the Mediterranean. Shortly after VJ Day, they married at the Griffith family home in Atlanta on Aug. 23, 1945. At the end of his military service, the couple relocated to Atlanta in August 1946. Maredith joined the Civil Service in July 1949, working at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, where she retired as a Project Clearance Specialist in December 1976. Upon retirement, they moved from Ellenwood, Georgia to Putnam County on Lake Sinclair. As their needs for living changed, they moved to Milledgeville, living at Villamar and later at The Cottages. After Mr. Griffith passed away in January 2017, she moved to The Fellowship Home at Meriwether in December 2017, where she lived until her passing. She was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church.
Survivors include her great niece, Elise Nunnally Schultz (Warren); brother, Newell "Hop" Byrd (Jane); nephew, Stephen P. Edwards (Brenda); niece, George Ann Bulfin Nunnally; great nephew, Adam Edwards; great niece, Susan Griffith Hamer; grand nephews, Warren T. Schultz and Gregory J. Schultz (Elizabeth); honorary children, Phillip Steven Wise and Pat Mathis Smith (Ike); honorary granddaughter, Jessica Klingener Minor (Doug), and Jessica and Doug's daughters, Bay Minor and Maredith Alison Minor; and many beloved nieces and nephews of the Byrd and Griffith families.
Memorial contributions to St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 309, Milledgeville, GA 31059 preferred in lieu of flowers.
