Jan Louise Polon Novic (JP) Obituary
Grass Valley, CA - Jan Polon Novic, known as JP, passed away peacefully at home on January 23, 2026, surrounded by her family, friends, dogs, music, and, as she insisted, stories and laughter.
JP was born Jan. 4, 1955, in Redwood City, California, to Julian and Fran Polon, and grew up in San Carlos with her sister, Lynn. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Josh Novic; her daughter, Zoe Novic; her son-in-law, Austin Meyer; and the many best friends whose lives she changed forever.
JP graduated from San Carlos High School in 1973, attended UC Berkeley, and earned a BS in Occupational Therapy from the University of Puget Sound. After ten years working as an OT at Stanford Hospital, she devoted her career to animal advocacy, working with the Palo Alto Humane Society and the Peninsula Humane Society.
In 1992, she co-founded the Center for Animal Protection & Education (CAPE), a nonprofit dedicated to rescuing vulnerable animals and promoting humane education.
For over three decades, CAPE has saved thousands of lives and impacted countless more. JP's legacy lives on through CAPE's farmed animal sanctuary in Grass Valley, its senior dog foster and adoption programs, and its ongoing mission to educate and empower the public to alleviate animal suffering.
The organization continues its vital work under the leadership of JP's daughter, Zoe.
JP was diagnosed with Multiple System Atrophy (MSA), a rare neurodegenerative illness. She met her illness with strength and grace. Even in her final days, she continued to visit the sanctuary animals, finding delight and peace in the presence of those she spent her life protecting.
A celebration of life in both Santa Cruz and Grass Valley will be announced in the coming months. You can find more information at capeanimals.org.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to CAPE. But most of all, on behalf of JP, continue your path through life with kindness as your guide.
