Harry  Phillips Jr.
Harry Jackson Phillips, Jr. age 89, passed away Monday, December 9, 2019. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 11, 2020 at First Baptist Church of Milledgeville. Dr. Terry Quick will officiate.
Mr. Harry was born October 17, 1930 in Branford, FL. He graduated from Tampa High School in 1948, and joined the US Navy serving 4 years, aboard the destroyer, USS John A, Bole. After his discharge he attended and graduated from the University of Florida as a forester in 1957. He worked in this profession for the next 30 ½ years with Continental Can Company managing forest property for them in South Carolina and Georgia.
He moved to Milledgeville in 1959 and became a member of the First Baptist Church. After retiring from his forester job, he served as the building superintendent at First Baptist from 1987-1998. He was a deacon and served on a variety of church committees. Harry prepared the Wednesday night meals at the church for 11 years and prepared the soups for the Easter Week Lunches.
He was a former member of the Kiwanis Club for 9 years and often prepared the pancakes for their yearly suppers. He delivered Meals on Wheels for 16 years.
Married to his beloved wife Linda Hipple Chaklos for 27 years, they enjoyed traveling both in the US and abroad, and enjoyed square dancing with the Lake Sinclair Twirlers and the Oconee River Buskers. He also prepared the delicious lunches for the monthly scrapbook functions sponsored by his wife. Besides cooking, he enjoyed creating things in his workshop, including furniture. He liked to bake sourdough bread and share it with family and friends, and he enjoyed growing hybrid tea roses and sharing these blooms with others.
He is survived by his wife Linda, children, Michelle (Doug) Henry and Keith (Susan) Phillips, grandson Ryan Phillips and a nephew Dale Tigner. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry Sr. and Hattie Phillips; his sisters Ruth Phillips Owens and Connie Phillips Tigner; his nephew David Tigner, his first wife Hilda Dean Phillips and his stepson Michael Chaklos.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. at the church and also following the service.
