Edwin Alton Gregory Obituary

Milledgeville, Georgia - Edwin Alton Gregory, 90, passed away Friday, July 26, 2024. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1 at First Methodist Church with the Rev. Mac Enfinger officiating. Private burial will be at Zion Hope Cemetery in Cordele, Georgia.

Mr. Gregory was born in Vienna, Georgia on Sept. 12, 1933, to the late Hardy "Bo" Gregory and Mary Wood Gaither Gregory. He graduated from Vienna High School. He then served his country in the United States Navy aboard the USS Kearsarge during the Korean War. Mr. Gregory graduated from Georgia College and then he attended the University of Georgia where he earned his master's degree in social work. He worked with Central State Hospital from 1974 to 1987 serving as deputy superintendent for eight years. He then moved to Savannah and was the superintendent of the Savannah Regional Hospital.

Mr. Gregory was dedicated to the service of his country and to serving other people. He was more than a veteran and a college graduate and a deputy superintendent. He spent his life serving other people. He volunteered in the community until he was physically unable, but more than that, he shaped the lives of his family members and guided us in such a way that taught us all to be more kind, gentle, caring, understanding and tolerant to people around us. He wanted to leave the world a better place than he found it, and he truly instilled this into his children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Edwin Alton Gregory III and was a member of First Methodist Church of Milledgeville.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy Johnson Gregory of Milledgeville; a son, Edwin A. Gregory, Jr. (Kathy) of Cordele; a daughter, Karen G. Harris (Danny) of Milledgeville; three brothers, Hardy Gregory Jr. (Toni) of Vienna, Charles Gregory (Jean Marie) of Vienna and Hulbert Gregory (Betty Sue) of Leesburg; a brother-in-law, Johnny Johnson (Mitchelle) of Cleveland, Georgia; four grandchildren, Travis Gregory (Aaron), Rachel Harris (Aiham), Karey Harris and Abby Harris; two step-grandchildren, Jay Jackson and Alicia Jackson; great grandchildren, Daniel Brandes, Alex and Aaliyah Mack, Sawyer Gregory, Ricky and Noah Moreno, Gabe Kelly, Eli Ham, and Lilith Harris; two step-great grandchildren, Ashlyn Jackson and Casey Tanner.
