Charles Lawton Cheeves Sr. Obituary

Milledgeville, Georgia - Charles Lawton Cheeves Sr., 89, passed away Friday, Aug. 30, 2024. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 22 at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jeff Morgan officiating. A private burial will be in Memory Hill Cemetery.

He was born in Milledgeville, Georgia Jan. 22, 1935, to the late James Lawton "Pete" Cheeves and Lillian Claire Leaptrott Cheeves. He attended GMC Prep School and also Georgia Military Junior College. While at GMC he was the Capt. of "C" Company. He was awarded "The Sabre" in 1954 as the captain of the winning team, which is a year-long competition. He also served as Batallion Adjudant. He also attended the University of Georgia and graduated in the class of 1957 with a bachelor's degree in banking and finance. He was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity. Mr. Cheeves earned his master's degree in business administration from Georgia College in 1971. He was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in the United States Army and served in active duty from 1957 until 1959. He served in the Army Reserves for 34 years and retired as a full colonel in 1995.

Mr. Cheeves served as vice president of The Merchants and Farmers Bank. He served as executive director of the Milledgeville Housing Authority, and was a former state president of the Georgia Association of Housing and Re-Development Authorities. He was president of the Milledgeville Jaycees in 1964, and served as a City Councilman for 12 years. He also served on the GMC Board of Trustees for eight years. He was an avid golfer and Georgia Bulldog fan. He and his wife Barbara traveled all over the USA during their retirement years. He was a member of First Baptist Church and was a former chairman of the finance committee. He was preceded in death by his sister, Angela Cheeves Kelly.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Atchison Cheeves of Milledgeville; his sons Charles Lawton "Chuck" Cheeves Jr. of Milledgeville and Paul Jeffery "Jeff" Cheeves (Tanya) of Cumming; four grandchildren, Andrew Lawton Cheeves (Maureen) of Roswell, Patrick James Cheeves (Caroline) of Raleigh, North Carolina, Madison Cheeves West (Daniel) of Yuma, Arizona and Evangeline Grace Cheeves of New York City. Four great grandchildren also survive.

The family would like to thank the staff at Autumn Lane Nursing Home for their care and support.

The family will receive friends Sunday, Sept. 22 from 1 until 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church.
