Milledgeville - Funeral services for Mrs. Bessie Leverette Tanner, 88, will be conducted Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at 2 p.m. in Williams Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Larry Glover officiating.

The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the funeral hour. Burial will be in Baldwin Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Tanner was predeceased by her husband, Albert Lee Tanner, and her daughter, Allison Tanner; parents, Edward Amida Leverett and Lucille Gladin Leverett; brothers, Edward, Bobby, George, Jimmy John and Floyd Leverett and her sister, Margaret Ivey.

Survivors include her sisters, Ann Deal, Gladys Akins and Evelyn Kelley, and brother, Jere Leverett. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Bessie was born in Washington County, where she spent most of her early life. As an adult she lived in Sandersville and Milledgeville. She was a devoted wife to Albert for 61 years. They had one precious daughter, Allison, but she mentored her younger siblings and a multitude of nieces and nephews as well as her sibling's grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Bessie always loved and taught any children especially at Harmony Baptist Church, where she was a devoted member. Bessie spent much time when Allison was young working in the schools, Girl Scouts, and community events.

Bessie was a wonderful vocalist until her diaphragm broke, which made her most unhappy! She saw the beauty of laughter in herself and others and she was a shining light in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her!

Her journey on this earth was one marked by love, compassion and unwavering faith in God, and her passing has left a void in the hearts of her family, friends, and many more whose lives were touched by her.
