Milledgeville - Barbara Atchison Cheeves, 88, passed away Sunday, June 28, 2026. A Celebration of Life for Barbara Atchison Cheeves will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 25, at First Baptist Church 330 S. Liberty St. Milledgeville, Georgia.

Mrs. Cheeves was born in Carr's Station, Georgia on July 11, 1937. Her family moved to Milledgeville in 1946. She attended Peabody High School and graduated in 1955. She was president of the Student Council and was voted "Miss Peabody High School" her senior year. She married Charles Lawton Cheeves on January 11, 1959, at First Baptist Church, and they were married for 65 years. She worked at Georgia College in Fiscal Services for 38 years until her retirement.

She was an avid gardener and loved to get on her knees and dig in the dirt. She enjoyed playing Bridge and Dominoes and Find-A-Word Puzzles. She was also a very good Water Skier. Mr. Cheeves loved to cook and also enjoyed watching "Wheel of Fortune" and "Jeopardy."

She and Charles traveled extensively in the '90s and early 2000s to places that included Alaska, Niagara Falls, Nashville, New York, California, The Bahama's, Cuba and all points in between.

Barbara was a faithful member of First Baptist Church and the Faith Sunday School Class.

She loved her grandchildren with all of her heart and enjoyed spending time with them.

She was preceded in death by her father Robert Lee Atchison and her mother Mary Downs Atchison, brothers Fred Atchison, Richard Atchison, and Bernard Atchison and her sister Betty Markels.

She is survived by her two sons, Charles Lawton Cheeves Jr. of Milledgeville and Paul Jeffery Cheeves (Tanya) of Cumming, Ga.; four grandchildren, Andrew Lawton Cheeves (Maureen) of Roswell, Patrick James Cheeves (Caroline) of Raleigh, N.C., Madison Avery West (Daniel) of Clarksville, Tenn., and Evangeline Grace Cheeves of New York City. She also has seven great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 25, at First Baptist Church.
