W. Dalton's Story
W. Dalton Smith age 91 passed away Monday, February 13, 2017. Services will be held at 11AM Friday, February 17, at First Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry Bradley officiating. Graveside services and interment will be on Saturday, February 18, at 11AM at Hilcrest Abbey East Cemetery in Savannah.
Mr. Dalton was born in Savannah, Georgia, one of five children born to parents William Troy and Bessie Garrett Smith. He graduated from Commerical High School in Savannah, GA. He learned to work at an early age and continued to do so throughout his life. He believed in doing things well. He served with the 286th Engr. C. Bn. in Germany, France, and Austria during WWII, witnessing the surrender of the German forces and Kufstein, Austria. After the War, he began a Railroad Career as an apprentice with the Seaboard Air Line RR. He served honorably for over 37 years. Mr. Dalton was a Master Mason and member of Solomons Lodge #1, Alee Shrine and Scottish Rite. Mr. Dalton loved his Lord and was a member of First Baptist Church of Milledgeville. He was preceded in death by his childhood sweetheart and beloved wife Dorothy Dukes Smith.
Survivors include his daughter Pamela Crossley and husband Neil of Charlotte, NC, granddaughter Katie Nakagawa and her husband Masato of San Francisco, two great grandchildren, Koji and Kazau Nakagawa, his special friend Ethelene Dyer Jones of Milledgeville, several nieces and a nephew also survive.
