Ramona Gay Strickland Parish, age 83, passed away April 16, 2017 in Columbus, Ga. A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, April 21, in the chapel of Moores Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Westview Cemetery. Visitation will be at 1 p.m. at Moores Funeral Home.
Ramona was born in Terrell County, Ga., on April 10, 1934. She graduated from Terrell County High School in 1952. Early in life, she was recognized for her outstanding vocal talent, winning several state music awards while she was in high school. When she married Charlie Hansel Parish Jr., they moved to Columbus, Ga., where they owned and operated WCLS Radio. Ramona was soloist at the First Baptist Church of Columbus and shared her vocal talents with local community organizations. While managing the office at WCLS, she also wrote and recorded award-winning commercials and simultaneously pursued a song writing and singing career, recording in Nashville, Tenn. She and Charlie later retired and moved to Milledgeville, Ga. When her sister Merry Ann Finch opened Cafe South, Mona, as she was known by her family and friends, helped out with various duties, but was best known for her scrumptious specialties such as caramel cake, banana pudding and pecan pie. She later returned to Columbus to be near her children and their families.
Ramona was predeceased by her parents, Lillie Knight Strickland and Clarence Asnah Strickland; sisters, Katrina Gloria Strickland, Merry Ann Finch, a brother, Van Durane Strickland, and Charlie Hansel Parish Jr.
Survivors include three children, Charlie Hansel Parish III (Donna), Timothy Nelson Parish (Gina), and Merry Parish Hancock; six grandchildren, Christie O'Neill (Doug), Misty Parish, Bryan Parish, Shannon Parish, Brandon Cantrell (Catherine), and Kerry Abdo (Misael); one great-grandson, Kaiden O'Neill, and one great-granddaughter, Ellie Mae Abdo; three sisters, Lucinda McMichael, Wanda Burgess, and Binky Strickland, and two brothers, Stan Strickland and Tony Strickland (Carol), and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.
