Nellie Hankins Hollis, age 96, was called home to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 3, 2017. She was born to Henry and Addie Hankins on a small farm outside the town of Sulligent, Al. She was the fourth child of eight children born to her parents which included 2 brothers (Bradley and Winston) and five sisters (Mavis, Eurmae, Dorothy, Grace and Delores). The lone surviving member of the family is now Delores.
At the age of thirty-five her father, Henry, passed away as a result of a stroke leaving his wife Addie to raise all eight children on their farm during the Great Depression. Her father Henry taught his children about Christ which inspired Nellie to accept Him as her Lord and Savior at the tender age of six years old, and she served Him faithfully for 90 years.
Nellie was joined in marriage to Roy Hollis and they raised three children ((Rachel - deceased), daughter Shelby and son Don). Nellie was employed as an expert seamstress for most of her adult life. Her husband Roy accidently lost his life in 1965; she later married Cyril Johnson and they lived in Forestdale, Al until his death. During this time of her life Nellie studied and passed a high school GED test. She was a believer of education, having to drop out of school in the sixth grade to help support her family. She moved to Eatonton in 2004 to live with her son Don and his wife Joy. She lived with them until her health declined to a point that she had to have continuous care provided by Green Acres Health and Rehab in Milledgeville.
She was a faithful member of Friendship Baptist Church at Lake Sinclair until her declining health caused her to limit her participation.
She is survived by her son, Don (Joy) of Eatonton, GA, a daughter Shelby (Bud, deceased) of Birmingham, Al, a step-son Wade Johnson (Renee) of Birmingham, Al, 8 grandchildren: J.D. Burson and Paul Burson of Birmingham, Al; Holly Hollis, Gray, Ga, Brittany Hollis (deceased) Eatonton Ga; Karen Hollis, Birmingham, Al; Amy Coppedge, Macon Ga; Lyndsey Coppedge , Atlanta, GA; Victor Sharp, Birmingham, Al; David and Dale Johnson, Birmingham, Al; 18 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
