Mary Floyd Pennington Clark


Mary Floyd Pennington Clark born Nov. 21, 1919, in Milledgeville, Ga., died at home in Chevy Chase, Md., Aug. 23, 2019, after a brief illness. Mary Floyd was the eldest of three daughters of Marvin Emory Pennington of Baldwin County and Sally Burney Hooten of Putnam County. She graduated in 1938 from Georgia State College for Women, receiving her master's in education from the University of Georgia. She taught in Moultrie and then Hart County as the elementary schools' supervisor.
In 1946 she married James Thaddeus Clark of Howard County, Maryland, and moved to Chevy Chase, Md., where she taught elementary school in Montgomery County for 23 years. Her loving husband of 46 years passed away in 1993. She was an active member of Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church, the National Society of Colonial Dames of America, the Washington Assembly, and the Chevy Chase Garden Club.
She is survived by her four daughters, Burney Pennington Clark, Molly Branch Clark Ruzicka, Desiree Dorsey Clark Pihl (Ron), Lucinda Pennington Clark Cramer, 10 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Her sisters, Sarolyn Pennington Moore and Ann Pennington Martin, preceded her in death.
Visitation is at Pumphrey Funeral Home, Aug. 30, from 5 to 7 p.m. A memorial service will be held at Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church at 1 p.m. on Aug. 31. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Georgia State College in Milledgeville.
