Irene Matthew's Story
Irene Matthew Smith, 93, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Sunday, Feb. 25, 2018. A celebration of her life will be held Thursday, March 1, 2018 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Macon Memorial Park Funeral Home with Mr. Ed White officiating. Burial will follow in Smith Family Cemetery on Sandy Point Road. The family will greet friends from 1 p.m. until the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Churches of Christ Disaster Relief Effort Inc., www.disasterreliefeffort.org.
Irene was born in Macon to the late Cleo and Doris Borum Matthew and was preceded in death by her husband, Y. Herman Smith of 38 years, and sister, Dorothy Whitten. She resided in Crawford County for 42 years but was currently at Fellowship Home at Meriwether in Milledgeville. Irene was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ faith. She was a long-time member of the Crawford County Homemakers Club and formerly served as the Crawford County treasurer. Irene was an avid Atlanta Braves fan and enjoyed board and card games in her later years.
Survivors include her sons, Matthew (Sue) Smith of Columbia, S.C. and Tim (Susan) Smith of Milledgeville; grandchildren, Ben and Ashley, Clayton and Jesse, Luke and Katie, Logan, Nate, Jessica and Cassidy; and great grandchildren, Sally, Henry and Adah.
