Dr. Roger  Noel


Dr. Roger Arthur Noel passed away July 18, 2019 from complications from Parkinson's Disease and myasthenia gravis.
He was born in Wanne, Belgium, as the youngest of four children. He was the first child in the family to go to a university and he graduated from the University of Liege with a License en Philosophie of Letters, Section germanique in 1965.
He came to the United States on a student visa in 1965 and received his master's degree in French literature from the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri. In 1984 he received his PhD in French literature from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.
He had a distinguished teaching career teaching at the University of Missouri St. Louis, Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois and at Georgia College. He came to Georgia College in 1992 as chair of what is now the department of World Languages and Culture. He received much recognition including a teaching award from Georgia College. He had many publications and editorships for several publications. He was also knighted by the French Government receiving the Palmes Academiques. This decoration is second to the Legion of Honor and is awarded to professors who have furthered the relationship between France and the United States. Roger retired in 2010 with emeritus status.
Dr. Noel was active in the Milledgeville community. He was active in Rotary Club. He was secretary for five years and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He participated in the Milledgeville Bicentennial celebration providing translation and interpretation services for the dignitaries who came to Milledgeville for the celebration. He was also active with the International Services at Georgia College serving briefly as associated vice-president over the program. He hosted international visitors who came to Milledgeville for the Flannery O' Connor Conferences at Georgia College. He developed a language bank to serve visitors to Milledgeville during the 1996 Olympics.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years Cookie Noel; daughters, Dr. Nadine Latham (John) of Macon, Georgia and Anouk Hoecker (Mark;) grandson, Henry Roger Hoecker of Tremont, Illinois. He is also survived by a niece and nephews of Belgium.
There will be a celebration in Dr. Noel's Memory at Georgia College in the early fall. The date is to be determined. The family requests that donations in Dr. Noel's memory be made to the Georgia College Foundation Endowed World Languages and Cultures Fund or to Tallulah Falls School Roger Noel Scholarship Fund.
