Catherine's Story

Text size

Catherine Garner Scott passed away September 2, 2017 at Methodist Hospice Residence in Memphis, Tennessee. Catherine, the eldest daughter of John and Catherine Garner, was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on November 9, 1941. She, and her younger sister Martha Marian, grew up in historic Milledgeville, Georgia.
Catherine attended Emory University before marrying, becoming a mother, and raising her family in the small town of Farmville, North Carolina. She completed her college degree with a B.A. in Education and taught Special Education for many years. After the passing of her mother, Catherine's father married Emily Singletary, giving her a loving second mother and second sister, with Emily's daughter, Jane. Catherine married George Scott, and they lived in New Bern, North Carolina over 37 years. She and George also loved the time spent in their mountain home, off the Blue Ridge Parkway in Sparta, North Carolina. When George passed away in 2014, Catherine moved to Memphis, Tennessee to be close to family as she battled an Alzheimer's Disease diagnosis. She was an avid reader, bridge player, gardener, and involved member of The Colonial Dames. Hosting dinner parties and member guest golf events in both New Bern and Sparta were cherished times with her many close friends.
Catherine was preceded in death by her mother, Catherine Treanor Garner; father, John Elmo Garner, Jr.; husband, George Rider Scott, Jr., and brother-in-law, Thomas Edwin Kingery. She leaves behind her second mother, Emily Singletary Garner; two sisters, Martha Marian Kingery and Jane Piper; her son, Chris Connell (Sandy); daughter Julie Connell; grandson, Cormac; granddaughter, Aidan; nieces; Cathy Strickland (Bill), Stephanie Kelly (Scott), Maggie McAllister (Micky), nephew, Jay Piper (Nicole), as well as many loving cousins, dear friends and wonderful caregivers.
A memorial service will be held at a future date at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, Catherine's family request donations in her memory to St. Stephen's Episcopal Church (220 Wayne Street, Milledgeville, GA 31061) or Methodist Hospice Residence (6416 Quince Rd. Memphis, TN 38119).
