Bobby Shell Byrd, 82, of Milledgeville passed away in his home after an extended illness. Born in Tampa, Fla. he moved to Macon at age 8. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2017 at 3 p.m. Burial will be held in Heritage Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 2 p.m. until the service hour.
Bobby was born to Ulysses and Ethel Howard Byrd Aug. 1, 1935. He married Patricia Smith June 1, 1955. After they married, they attended Norman College, graduating in 1963. While attending Mercer, Bobby worked for Bibb County Department of Family and Children's Services. After his graduation from Mercer, Bobby went on to earn a master's degree in social work from Tulane University in 1965. In addition to his master's degree, he earned many areas of certification: licensed clinical social worker, National Association of Social Work and Academy of Certified Social Workers. He spent his career serving others as a State of Georgia Field Representative of the Department of Family and Children's Services in the Waycross area, Milledgeville YDC, Central State Hospital and the Georgia War Veterans Home.
Bobby was preceded in death by his parents, Ulysses and Ethel Byrd, and a brother Kenneth Byrd. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Patricia Byrd. He also leaves a son, Rodney Byrd, and a daughter, Marde (Glenn) Ray, and sister, Betti (Dan) Hodges. He had three grandchildren, Matt (Taylor) Ray, Jared Ray and Rachel Ray, as well as two great-grandchildren, Abigail and Lily Ray.
Bobby was a member of First Baptist Church of Milledgeville, Milledgeville Lions Club, and was an avid woodworker. He will be missed by those faithful friends he leaves behind, Doris and Doyle Boyd, and caregivers, Erma Hall, Mary Ritchie, Joann Butts and Tonya Wilson.
