Betty Walker

May 07, 2018

Mrs. Betty Butler Walker, 83, passed away Monday, May 7, 2018. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 11, at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerry Bradley officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Hill Cemetery.
Betty Butler Walker was born June 14, 1934, to Briscoe and Julia Turner Butler in Deepstep. If legend is correct, she was a beauty, small at 3 pounds, but mighty. That phrase could be used to describe Betty throughout her life.
She was third of five children, little sister to Mary and Mickie, but big sister to Billy and Jerry. She graduated from Peabody School in 1951.
She married the love of her life, E. Yancey Walker on Jan. 8, 1953, during the Korean War, and spent two years in North Carolina experiencing life as a young military wife while forging some lifelong friendships.
Upon returning to Milledgeville in 1955, Betty and Yancey started a family, which included two sons. She worked outside the home managing the offices of several physicians, Dr. E. Y. Walker Jr. being one. She also began pursuit of one of her lifelong hobbies, bridge. She played in several clubs for more than 60 years and won (a lot). Her last game was last month. She was a hospital volunteer and an active member of First Baptist Church. Notably, she volunteered in the nursery at FBC for 40 years.
She was predeceased by her parents and sister, Mary Wolbert. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, E. Yancey Walker, her sons, Col. E. Yancey Walker, IV (Ret.) (Joyce), Paul T. Walker (Penny), grandchildren, Lt. Col. E. Yancey Walker, V (Ginny), Christopher Walker (Alyssa), Brandon P. Walker (Melena), Hannah Walker, Macey Walker; seven great grandchildren; a sister, Mickie Stephenson; brothers, Billy Butler and Jerry Butler; brother-in-law, Perry Walker (Patricia); numerous nieces and nephews, as well as a host of close friends.
The family will receive friends Friday from 1 until 2 p.m. at the church.
Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to First Baptist Church P.O. Box 795 Milledgeville, Ga. 31059.
Moores Funeral Home & Crematory has charge of arrangements.
