Helen (Betty) Elizabeth Smith Rich, 73, also known by her grandchildren as "Bee Bee," of Milledgeville, passed away peacefully in her home while sleeping on Nov. 15, 2017.
Betty was born at Wilsonville, Ala., Dec. 24, 1943. Her parents were Alvin B. and Edna Smith. Early in her life, the Smith family moved to the home she knew most of her younger life, Marianna, Fla., where she attend primary through high school, and Chipola Junior College. As a military spouse, she was recognized as a numbered member of the Artillery Order of Molly Picher, and was awarded the Department of the Army, Certificate of Achievement as she distinguished herself by active and dedicated support of soldier welfare, community betterment, and family development. Her valuable leadership in the military and civilian community was marked by significant contributions to organizations such as the March of Dimes, Battered Spouse Program, Officers Wives Club, Scottish Rite Hospital, Summer Camp for Underprivileged Children, and Cub and Boy Scouts. After their Regular Army retirement in April 1987, the Rich family returned to their home in Milledgeville, where she worked for many years in the behavioral health treatment community until her eventual retirement.
She is preceded by two deceased brothers, Mark and Terry Smith, and survived by Kaye F. Torres of Pensacola, Fla. While attending college, she met and married Bobby G. Rich, on Dec. 31, 1965, at Marianna, and thereafter began a 53-year marriage and 23-year journey as an army wife and mother of two sons, Marshall S. Rich of Stafford, Va., and Sterling A. Rich of Suwanee. There are three grandchildren of Marshall and Patti Rich, Stewart, Taylor and Jake Rich.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 18, 2017 at 2 p.m. in the Williams Funeral Home Chapel in Milledgeville with Dr. Jay Hodges officiating. Burial will follow in Heritage Memorial Park. A visitation will be held Saturday from 1 p.m. until the service hour.
