Bessie Louise's Story
The Homegoing Celebration for Mrs. Bessie Louise Mitchell, Milledgeville, will be held Friday, Sept. 22, 2017, at 1 p.m. from the Wesley Chapel AME Church, Milledgeville. Interment will follow in the Bone Cemetery.
Mrs. Mitchell was a graduate of Eddy High School and Fort Valley State University earning a bachelor of science degree in education.
Sister Mitchell inspired many students and young people, teaching in the Cleveland City School System, Cleveland, Ohio and Pelham City School System, Pelham, Ga. After returning to Milledgeville, she continued her love for teaching as a substitute teacher with the Baldwin County School System.
She was married to the late Mr. James Edward Mitchell.
Her husband James preceded her in death, along with her son, Mr. Arthur Louis "Spanky" Mitchell.
Mrs. Mitchell enjoyed fulfilling her call to serve uniting with Bethel AME Church and the Summerhill Baptist Church while away teaching. Upon returning to Milledgeville, she affiliated with her home church of Wesley Chapel AME Church where she served on many boards to include: Steward and Stewardess, Sunday School, and organized the Lay. She traveled to many meetings and conventions. She was an affiliate of many organizations including the American Legion Women's Auxiliary, The Order of the Eastern Star, Retired Teachers Association, the Sallie Ellis Davis Club, and the Alumni Chapter of Fort Valley State University, Milledgeville.
Sister Bessie Louise Butts Mitchell entered into eternal rest at her residence Monday, Sep. 18, 2017, at the beautiful age of 90 years young.
She leaves to cherish her memories one daughter: Mrs. Betty J. Hogan; one son: Mr. Karl Mitchell; one sister: Mrs. Mary F. (Hershel) Evans; a daughter-in-law: Mrs. Floree Mitchell; devoted nieces: Mrs. Denise Gayle (Jerome) Waller, Ms. Karen L. Rhyner and Mrs. Kimberly Evans-Gates; several other relatives and friends.
